Family of teen killed in police shooting sues Walmart

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WVEC) -- The family of a Portsmouth teen killed by police has filed a new lawsuit against the store where he died.

William Chapman died in 2015. Officer Stephen Rankin shot and killed Chapman at the Walmart on Fredrick Boulevard, after a security guard said Chapman was shoplifting.

Rankin is currently in prison for manslaughter for the shooting.

But Chapman's family says a Walmart security guard racially profiled Chapman, which led to the shooting and ultimately the teen's death.

The lawsuit seeks $31 million in damages, according to our partners at the Virginian Pilot.
