PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WVEC) -- Portsmouth police say the body of  a man found Tuesday was that of a city worker who was killed while on the job.

Officers were called out to the 1300 block of Effingham Street around 9:45 a.m. This is off Pavilion Drive, near the I-264 Downtown Tunnel on-ramp.

When officials arrived on scene they found 56-year-old Willie V. Allen unresponsive in the 1900 block of Pavilion Dr.

Medics were called to help, but Allen was pronounced dead at the scene.

Due to the injuries found on his body, detectives are investigating Allen's death as a homicide.

Allen has been an employee with the City of Portsmouth for more than 30 years, and was working during the time that he was killed.

"He was a good man. He worked very hard," says his ex-wife Beverly. She also says he was "an awesome provider" to their three children.

The cause of death has not been released, and officials have not given any suspect information at this time.
