Inmate who sought medical help died of perforated ulcer

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) - The medical examiner's office says a 60-year-old Virginia inmate who sought medical help two days before his death died of a perforated stomach ulcer.

Donna Price of the medical examiner's office in Norfolk tells The Daily Press that Henry Stewart experienced a "natural death." She declined to elaborate further.

Stewart died at the Hampton Roads Regional Jail in August two days after he filled out an emergency grievance form saying he had blacked out twice in less than 24 hours and couldn't hold down food or water. The form said a nurse determined his concerns "not to be an emergency."

Stewart's death and the death of a mentally ill inmate at the jail last year prompted Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring to ask the U.S. Justice Department to investigate the jail.
