Jail inmate dies after being taken to hospital

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WVEC) -- An inmate at the Hampton Roads Regional Jail died at the hospital Tuesday morning.

A spokeswoman for the jail said Frederick Mitchell, 56, arrived there on June 15. Shortly after his arrival, staff members moved him to a medical housing unit because of serious medical conditions.

Mitchell's health deteriorated more, so the jail took him to Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center on Monday. Family members were with him when he died Tuesday.

In the past year, the jail has worked to improve inmate care and transparency after two high-profile inmate deaths.
