Jail seeks grant to boost inmate health care

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WVEC) -- It's been more than a year since Jamycheal Mitchell died inside the Hampton Roads Regional Jail. Now the jail is looking to change how it cares for the mentally ill.

According to our partners at the Virginian Pilot, jail officials are asking for $680,000 to pay for a clinical therapist supervisor and two counselors.

They also want to help provide housing and medication assistance upon release.

The regional jail, which is in Portsmouth, houses about 1,100 inmates, nearly half of whom have psychiatric disorders.
