Man injured in Portsmouth shooting

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WVEC) -- Portsmouth Police are investigating after a man was shot at the intersection of George Washington Highway and Bainbridge Avenue Sunday afternoon.

Police tweeted that a call came in reporting the shooting at 2:34 p.m.

The man was reportedly shot in the lower body. He was taken to a local hospital in a personal vehicle.

People nearby told 13 News Now that kids frequent the gas station where the shooting happened. A skate part is right across the street.

Darryl and Angela Epps bring their grandson to the park and are worried.

"He doesn't know what's going on, so that's the way we'd like to keep it like that," said Daryl.

"Hopefully the next time we come out here, this won't have to worry about [a shooting]," Angela said.

A nearby gas station said a bullet shattered a glass door of its store. A Good Samaritan told 13 News Now he bought plywood to fix his friend's damaged storefront.

"It's terrible," said Chris Avery. "Thankfully no kids were in here because someone really could've gotten hurt."

Avery said police found about 10 gun shell casings at the scene of the crime.

Police said the victim's injuries are considered non-life threatening.

The investigation continues to find out the surrounding circumstances.
