Man to serve 30 years for murder of 1-year-old, injury of woman

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WVEC) -- Anthony Holley will spend three decades in prison for a shooting that led to the death of a 1-year-old in June 2015.

Holley entered guilty pleas to First Degree Murder and Aggravated Malicious Wounding in June 2016.

A judge sentenced him Thursday.

Portsmouth police said in June 2015, they received a call about a shooting on Maple Avenue in Prentis Park. Emergency workers found 1-year-old Dion Lofton, Jr. with a gunshot wound to his right cheek, and an exit wound to the back of his head.

Medics took Lofton to the hospital where he died.

A 25-year-old woman who was a friend of Lofton's parents was also shot in her lower back.

Police also charged Jerry Atkinson, Jr. and Marquis Hinton in connection to Lofton's murder. A jury acquitted Atkinson of charges related to the death in May of this year.

At his sentencing Thursday, Holley received 50 years for the murder. The judge suspended 25 years.

He received 20 years for the malicious wounding, with 15 years suspended.

Holley will serve the sentences consecutively.
