NAACP wants investigation after woman dies in Portsmouth City Jail

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WVEC) -- The NAACP is calling for a special grand jury investigation after a woman died while in custody at the Portsmouth City Jail.

Our partners at The Virginian-Pilot report that back in August, Pamela Riddick was booked on a grand larceny charge. Within 48 hours of her arrest, deputies reportedly noticed she was in medical distress and took her to Maryview Medical Center, where she died.

A friend of Riddick's was also arrested and placed in the neighboring jail cell, and disputes the sheriff's office's claims. The friend told the Pilot she noticed Riddick was unresponsive that morning and called for help, but no one came.

On Monday, the NAACP demanded answers.

"Today the Portsmouth NAACP is calling on the Commonwealth Attorney, Mrs. Stephanie Morales, to seek a special grand jury to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of Ms. Pamela Riddick in the Portsmouth City Jail," said NAACP chapter President James Boyd.

The Portsmouth Police Department is currently handling the investigation into Riddick's death.
