Portsmouth Fire Department appoints new chief

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WVEC) -- James E. Hoffler was appointed the City of Portsmouth's new fire chief. 

Hoffler was serving as acting fire chief up until today, Dec. 1 when he assumed his role as fire chief.

He started his career with the fire department in 1979, making his way to deputy chief fire in 2012.

Previously, Dwayne V. Bonnette was the city's fire chief before he announced his resignation to accept a position in Richmond.
