Churchland High student arrested for bringing gun to school

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WVEC) -- A 14-year-old student has been arrested after police say he brought a gun to Churchland High School.

Portsmouth Public Schools says a teacher confronted the student at 8:30 a.m. when the student was showing something in a backpack to another student.

The 14-year-old left when he was confronted by the teacher, who then contacted security.

The student wouldn’t agree to be searched at first, then consented. The student resource officer found and confiscated the gun.

No threats were made toward anyone at the school, and no one was hurt.

The school was on lockdown for about an hour until the student was removed from the campus.

The teen is currently charged with possession of a firearm with ammunition on school property, possession of a stolen firearm, underage possession of a firearm, and concealment of a firearm.  Additional charges could be pending.

The school division made a robocall to alert parents of the incident, and students were given a copy of the following letter to take home on Tuesday:
