Milestone for Sentara healthcare center expansion

SUFFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- A new medical services building at Sentara BelleHarbour under construction in Suffolk had a "topping" ceremony Wednesday morning. According to the American Institute of Steel Construction it's meant to bring good fortune.

The ceremony marks a construction milestone. The new 85,000 square-foot facility on Route 17 will have an ambulatory surgery center and an expanded emergency department. It also includes a helipad.

Along with the $34 million building, comes jobs. "We have about 75 employees on the campus at the present time, but this will be moving us up to about 135, 140 employees on campus," said Dr. Steve Julian, who leads the hospital and others within the corporation.

The new four-story building will be positioned on what is now a surface parking lot in front of the current three-story building, which opened in 2008. The two buildings will be connected at the first-floor level and replacement surface parking will be added to the campus.

The building will open in 2019.
