Suffolk Towers Apartments evacuated due to fire

SUFFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- The Suffolk Towers Apartments were evacuated Friday night after a fire started in a vacant unit.

Authorities were first notified of the incident in the 100 block of North Man Street at 8:44 p.m.

The first fire units arrived on the scene at 8:51 p.m., according to Battalion Chief Chuck Knight. The fire was contained to a vacant unit on the sixth floor and deemed under control at 9:04 p.m. The unit sustained minor damage.

The building was evacuated during the incident with all residents allowed to return after the fire was extinguished.

Firefighters say the cause of the fire was due to carelessly discarded smoking material.

No injuries were reported.
