Woman swims after dog in Nansemond River, husband calls 9-1-1

SUFFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- A woman swam out into the Nansemond River trying to rescue her dog, prompting her husband to call 9-1-1 on Sunday.

According to authorities, the woman thought her dog was in danger so she swam out after it. Her husband lost sight of her and called 9-1-1.

The woman was located still in the water near the 2200 block of Bridge Road, at the north end of the Nansemond River Bridge.

She was not in distress, but was still picked up out of the river by a rescue boat and returned to shore.

As of 1:15 p.m., the dog is still missing. Spokesperson Debbie George pointed out there is a lot of shoreline where the dog could have come ashore on his own.

No further information was released.
