VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- Two men have been hospitalized after being shot in Virginia Beach and a group of middle school students witnessed the entire thing.
Emergency dispatchers received a call about an incident involving a gun in the 1200 block of Blue Jay Dr. Shortly before 2:10 p.m. a group of people were at the location.
The students had just gotten off the school bus when they knew something was wrong. A group of about ten men were in a brawl outside a nearby house.
“They were yelling, ‘don’t mess with bloods’ and everything, these gangs,” said one student.
“Somebody said, ‘go get the stick’ and we turned around and started running because we assume that meant a gun,” said another student.
The students say they ran back to the school bus for protection, but there was none to be found.
“I asked the bus driver, ‘can I get on here to call,’ and they said ‘no’ and they shut the door in my face,” said a student.
“We tried to get on the bus but the bus driver said ‘no’ and slammed the door,” said another student.
“I was like why I can’t I get on the bus because it’s much safer,” said another student.
Kim Kenyon’s daughter was one of the children not allowed back on the bus.
“I can’t believe that she didn’t open the door for my kids,” said Kenyon. “She just endangered the lives of children, I mean a bullet could have hit any one of those children.”
Kenyon plans to take this matter up with Virginia Beach school officials as soon as they return from Thanksgiving Break. The school district was not available for comment Wednesday night.
“I need an explanation and it better be better than, ‘I didn't know,’ because I am really upset about this,” said Kenyon.
As for the two men who were shot, police believe they were found about a mile and a half away on the 3500 block of Poppy Crescent. Police received a called around 2:15 p.m. from that location.
The two men were taken to the hospital with unknown injuries.
Virginia Beach Police are still investigating this shooting. So far they have no suspects and have made no arrests.
