Road reopens after part of street collapses

Part of South Plaza Trail in Virginia Beach collapsed after a car hit a fire hydrant, flooding the roadway.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) – Both sides of South Plaza Trail reopened by 9:30 a.m. Monday after part of the roadway collapsed earlier in the morning.

Dispatchers said a vehicle hit a fire hydrant, flooding the street. The driver of the vehicle left.

The area affected by the closure was between Windsor Oaks Boulevard and Windsor Gates Road.

The Department of Public Utilities and Public Works worked for hours making emergency repairs so that the roadway could reopen.
