Va. Beach police arrest man in connection to fatal New Year's Day hit-and-run

Police are still investigating a hit and run just after New Year's Eve in Virginia Beach.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- Police said they have arrested and charged 26-year-old Tyeler Hutton with several charges relating to a serious hit and run crash that happened in the early morning hours on New Year's Day. 

The crash happened just after 1:30 a.m. on January 1 at the intersection of South Independence Boulevard and Bonney Road. 

Police said it was a two-car accident that involved a white Dodge Durango and a gray Ford Focus. Hutton, the driver of the Durango, reportedly ran away from the scene, while the driver of the Ford Focus, 40-year-old Thomas Hitt, sustained life-threatening injuries.

Hitt later died as a result of his injuries on January 1.

Hutton is charged with felony hit and run resulting in death, reckless driving, driving on a suspended/revoked operators license, no seatbelt and possession/transport of a firearm by a convicted felon. 

Police said he was denied bond.
