Va. Beach sheriff's deputy killed in head-on crash

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- A deputy with the Virginia Beach Sheriff's Office died Thursday after hitting a vehicle head-on.

Authorities received a call reporting a vehicle crash in the 2000 block of Livingston Oak Drive at 6:31 a.m. Tonya Pierce with Virginia Beach Police says the crash involved a 1999 Dodge Caravan and a 2015 Ford Edge.

An investigation found the Dodge Caravan was heading east on Livingston Oak Drive at the intersection of Outerbridge Quay and the Ford Edge was heading west. At some point, the Dodge Caravan entered the westbound lanes and hit the Ford Edge head-on.

The driver of the Dodge Caravan, 56-year-old Edgardo G. Lucero, was taken to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.

Authorities said Lucero served as a deputy with the Virginia Beach Sheriff's Office for 15 years.

Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash, police said.
