Virginia Beach to residents: Check your storm drains

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- With Hurricane Matthew bringing the risk of heavy rain and strong wind to Hampton Roads this weekend, the City of Virginia Beach is asking its residents to check for clogged storm drains in their neighborhoods ahead of time, to help minimize the risk of street flooding.

If you see a storm drain that is covered in leaves, lawn clippings and other debris, the city asks that you call 385-1470 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. so that a crew can come out and clean it up ahead of the storm.

The city also asks residents to make sure they're not accidentally contributing to the problem by blowing debris into the storm drains or setting out garbage so that it blocks the drain lines.
