Weekend barbecue set to honor fallen Virginia Beach SEAL

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- The first annual Devon Grube Memorial Barbecue Classic will honor the fallen Navy SEAL it's named after.

The event is set to take place from October 6 to October 8.

On Dec., 28, 2016, Devon Grube died after a kayak he was in overturned near Cape Charles.

Grube, who was a member of SEAL Team Eight, was originally from North Dakota but made Virginia Beach his home.

After the attacks on September 11, 2011, Grube enlisted in the Navy. He did tours in Afghanistan, Europe, and Africa. Grube often mentored and trained younger SEALS.  Devon left behind his wife, Margie, and three kids.

Operation Once in a Lifetime, along with Grube's wife, will honor him while also raising funds to support the Grube family, Navy SEAL Foundation, and Operation Once in a Lifetime in support of Families of Fallen Service Members.

Prizes like a full-sized Dale Ernhardt, Jr Signed Justice League Nascar helmet, Pittsburg Steelers Helmet (signed by  over 27 players), a signed Jake Owen Guitar, and a custom Wood American Flag with secret compartment will be raffled off.  See a full list of prizes, and purchase tickets here.

Competitors from the Kansas City BBQ Society are coming from around the country to support the event.  In addition to food, there will be musical performances by Quarter Horse, Little Country, and more.  The event will have something for everyone!
