Newport News student sent to office over shirt

Do you think this shirt is inappropriate for school?

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) – A Newport News mother is confused after she says her daughter got sent to the school office over her t-shirt.

The shirt reads “Virginity Rocks”.

Ultimately the Woodside High school student was sent back to class, but the girl's mother is still upset that there was ever a question.

16- year-old Cidney Jackson says she was walking to class when a teacher stopped her and asked to read her shirt.

“When I showed it to her she said it was slightly inappropriate and I should go to the office and see if I should be put in ISS,” Jackson says.  “It was a positive message so I thought it was okay for school.”

Jackson went to the office. Eventually someone sent her back to class. She called her mom Demetrius Jackson later that day.

“I thought it was strange,” Jackson says. “For a young lady to not be ashamed of her virginity it's a positive thing.”

13News Now reached out to school officials, who still are looking into the situation.

Despite what the teacher said, Jackson says she's proud of her daughter, and proud that her daughter isn't afraid to walk in her own shoes.

“For her to be 16 and still be a virgin it's a positive thing and I’d let to let all the young ladies know there's no shame in being a virgin,” Jackson says.

Cidney has a message of her own.

“You shouldn't be afraid for people to know you still have it,” Jackson says. “It's not a bad thing.”

When asked if she plans to wear the shirt ever again, Jackson says yes, and plans on rocking it.
