Coast Guard airlifts cruise ship passenger near Bermuda

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (WVEC) -- The Coast Guard medevaced a man off a cruise ship 225 miles southwest of Bermuda on Tuesday.

Coast Guard crews at Air Station Elizabeth City received word around 12:45 p.m. that a 43-year-old man needed to be airlifted off the cruise ship Norwegian Gem after suffering from symptoms of appendicitis.

A C-130 airplane crew and MH-60 helicopter crew launched from Elizabeth City and arrived to the scene around 12:09 a.m. Tuesday. The man and his wife were taken to Bermuda.

The helicopter crew arrived to Bermuda around 1 a.m. The man was then transferred to emergency medics.
