SALVO, N.C. (WVEC) - A man disappeared in the surf off a North Carolina beach Sunday morning, and is still missing despite an all-day effort to find him.
According to a spokesperson for the U.S. Coast Guard, Fifth District, they were contacted at around 10:30 am by Dare Co. Emergency Dispatch about a missing swimmer in Salvo, NC, near the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
The swimmer is a 55-year-old man. His family was on the shore while he went in the water. He began having trouble in the surf and struggled to get back to shore for about 20 minutes before eventually going under.
A lifeguard from Chicamacomico Banks Water Rescue arrived and went out in the surf to search for the man. At this point he had been underwater for about five minutes. The lifeguard actually located him, but a wave separated them and the man went back under and disappeared.
The lifeguard then asked Dare Co. to contact the Coast Guard, which launched a 47-foot motor lifeboat, as well as a Jayhawk helicopter to help in the search. They’ve been searching all day, but have been unsuccessful in locating the missing man.
The Coast Guard spokesperson said they’ll suspend the search at sunset.
