NC Highway 12 reopens on Hatteras Island

HATTERAS, N.C. (WVEC) -- Conditions will soon allow for save travel along NC Highway 12 on Hatteras Island, according to NCDOT.

Transportation officials say crews have worked diligently to clear sand and water that has covered the roadway since Hurricane Matthew struck.

Bases on current conditions, the Dare County Control Group has determined that visitors will be allowed access to the villages of Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon and Buxton, beginning 7 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 13.

Officials say previous restrictions still remain for areas south of Buxton Back Road and NC 12, including the villages of Frisco and Hatteras village. Residents, non-resident property owners and non-resident employees of businesses with reentry passes will be allowed access, according to Dare County officials.

Visitors coming to unrestricted villages are encouraged to check with their rental company to confirm reservations before traveling to the area since some properties require repairs.

Hyde County officials say once the ferries from Hatteras Village to Ocracoke Island are operational, there will be restricted access to Ocracoke Island. No visitors will be given access to Ocracoke Island until further notice, Hyd county officials say.

Only those with proper identification will be given access to the ferry dock once ferries are operational.
