AVON, NC (WVEC) -- The body of a teenager who disappeared last week while swimming in the Outer Banks has been recovered.
According to our partners at The Virginian Pilot, someone found the the 17-year-old near the Avon Pier, about 15 miles south of where he disappeared.
The teen and his friend were swimming in the ocean in the town of Waves on Hatteras Island. Both were pulled out by a strong current, although the friend was able to swim back. At one point, a lifeguard reportedly spotted the 17-year-old, but crews were unable to get to him.
The search for the teen was suspended over the weekend.
He is the eight person to drown off the shores of the Outer Banks this year. His name has not been released.
