Coast Guard searching for missing OBX swimmer

COROLLA, NC (WVEC) -- The US Coast Guard is helping in the search for a man who disappeared in the waters off Corolla Beach.

Coast Guard Sector North Carolina received the call from 911 dispatch, reporting a 30-year-old man was last seen by his wife and friend going underwater, but then never surfacing for air at about 12:45 p.m. Thursday.

The swimmer, who has not been identified at this time, is described as a black male, 5'10" and 200 pounds and wearing a blue and orange bathing suit.

The Coast Guard dispatched an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew and a 47-foot medium life boat crew from Station Oregon Inlet in Nags Head to assist Corolla Ocean Rescue members in the search.

The search is still ongoing. The Corolla Beach Rescue Life Guard Service is reporting rip currents are in the area.

"Anyone with information about the missing swimmer should contact the Sector North Carolina command center at 910-343-3800," said Coast Guard Lt. Tiffany Zehnle, command duty officer for the case.
