WAVES, N.C. (WVEC) -- A 17-year-old has been missing since Thursday after disappearing in heavy waves off the Outer Banks.
According to the Virginian Pilot, Boone Vandzura, Chief Ranger at Cape Hatteras national Seashore, says the teen and a friend were swimming in the ocean when they were pulled outward.
The friend made it safely back to shore. Rescuers spotted the 17-year-old briefly but were unable to reach him, Vandzura said.
The Coast Guard searched Thursday night and Friday morning.
Officials say it is unclear if the teens were caught in a rip current.
