Woman killed in overnight Edenton house fire

EDENTON, N.C. (WVEC) -- A woman is dead after her house caught on fire overnight.

Flames engulfed the home on Valentine Avenue just before 1 a.m. on Friday.

Edenton Fire Department Chief Jay Fortenbery tells 13News Now 29-year-old Autrice Heckstall and her mother were cooking on the stove, which started the fire.

Heckstall did not make it out of the house and died. Fortenbery says her mother tried going back into the house to save her daughter but the smoke was too thick.

No foul play is suspected.
