ODU: Upcoming report paints sluggish economic picture

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - New research on Virginia's economy paints a sluggish picture.

In a report that will be released next month, Old Dominion University says Virginia is struggling to create private sector jobs. The state's transportation infrastructure is also under stress. And unwillingness among communities to work together is holding the state back.

Full contents of the second annual State of the Commonwealth report will be revealed Dec. 2 in Williamsburg.

The university says the report dives into issues of economic inequality in Virginia. For instance, 80 percent of the economy is clustered in Northern Virginia, Richmond and Hampton Roads. And Northern Virginia has seen relatively strong growth since the recession. But that success has not been replicated in much of the rest of the state.
