Off-duty corrections officer shot in Newport News

A Corrections Officer is fighting for his life tonight after he was shot on Gloucester Drive in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- A Corrections Officer is fighting for his life after he was shot several times on Gloucester Drive in Newport News.

The shooting happened Wednesday around 9:30 p.m. The man works at the Hampton Roads Regional Jail.

People living at the Cottage Grove apartment complex are trying to make sense of the violence right outside their doors.

James Eley came home Wednesday night to police and crime scene tape everywhere.

“I pray for this area all the time,” Eley says.  “People say they live in nice neighborhoods and they never thought this would happen here but things happen in any neighborhood; Satan is running rampant but we won't be scared because God has all power.”

Jail officials are not releasing the name of the officer for privacy reasons.

Right now, police have no suspect information.
