One dead, another injured in foggy Southampton crash

COURTLAND, Va. (WVEC) -- One person was killed and another hospitalized following a two-vehicle crash in Southampton County, the sheriff's office said.

The crash happened around 7:45 a.m. at the intersection of Southampton Parkway (Highway 58) and Buckhorn Quarter Road.

Arriving deputies found that due to fog, visibility was only about 100 yards at the scene. Investigators say a car was making a left-hand turn onto Highway 58 when it collided with another vehicle.

The driver who was making the turn, 66-year-old Veronica Wilson of Courtland, died at the scene.

The driver of the second car, 50-year-old Dena West of Suffolk, was transported to Southampton Memorial Hospital for treatment. Nobody else was in either vehicle.

Traffic was stopped or restricted for about two hours, while crews worked to clear the scene.

No charges are expected.
