Owner: Dog she gave up found on abandoned property

Chris Dillon was shocked when she got a call from Norfolk Animal Care Center that they were in possession of her dog.

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- Chris Dillon was shocked when she got a call from Norfolk Animal Care Center that they were in possession of her dog.

Dillon was with her current dog when she was contacted by the Animal Care Center.

She soon learned that the shelter was referring to the dog she surrendered a year ago, Jake. She said Jake was found with nine other dogs on an abandoned property.

“We did not recognize the dog,” said Dillon. “They showed us a picture we did not think it was our dog.”

Dillon told 13NewsNow she surrendered Jake to a rescue because he developed behavioral problems after her divorce. She said the rescue assured her it would keep and care for Jake for the rest of his life.

“You assume when you send them to a rescue group that your animal is going to be tended for the way that you couldn’t,” said Dillon.

But when reunited with Jake, Dillon said he was not the same.

“I was crying my eyes out,” said Dillon. "He’s so emaciated, he’s got no muscle tone – he’s just bone. He’s smaller than he was when he was two years old when he was a puppy when I got him.”

Dillon said a year ago, Jake was in perfect health. Now, he has cancer lesions and worms.

On average, he used to weigh 88 pounds. Now, he weighs between 50 and 55 pounds.

“To have no body mass and to have lesions all over him, this is neglect,” said Dillon. “This is severe neglect. No one does this to a dog.”

The Norfolk Animal Care Center confirmed they received 10 dogs from animal control this past weekend.

13NewsNow contacted Norfolk Animal Control in order to find out how the dogs were found and who was responsible for their care, but they have not returned our calls.
