Pilot crashes plane to avoid deer on the runway

FRANKLIN, Va. (WVEC) -- A pilot was unhurt after his plane went off the runway to avoid hitting a deer at Beverly Rose Municipal Airport, State Police said.

The accident happened at about 2 p.m. Monday.  Investigators said Donald Wayne Miller of Chiefland, Florida, was attempting to land his single engine Piper airplane when he saw the deer on the runway.

Miller steered his aircraft onto the soft grass, which is where the landing gear gave way and caused the nose of the plane to hit the ground.

No one was injured in the crash.

The FAA has been notified.
