Police: Teen charged hit and run, weapon possession in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- According to police, a 16-year-old caused an accident, fled the scene and was found with a weapon on Sunday.

At 11:49 a.m. police responded to a leaving the scene accident on the 15600 block of Warwick Boulevard.

While at the intersection of Warwick Blvd and Ashton Green Blvd. a blue Ford Escape rear ended the victim causing the 30-year-old Hampton man's car onto the rear of the SUV in front of him. 

The driver of the Ford Escape dove off, and the victim followed.

The victim was able to get the licenses plate number and contact police.

When police tried to stop the Ford Escape, the driver failed to stop and crashed their vehicle.

The 16-year-old drive fled the scene on foot.

He was eventually found in the 100 block of Viscount Drive.

The driver was detained and possibly identified as the offending driver.

Police also found a hand gun in the vehicle.

The 16-year-old was charged with, stolen goods, possession of a firearm, and for the accidents of the rear ended cars.

The suspect was under the age of 18, so their identity is protected.
