Poquoson residents concerned about "Big Woods" development plan

A major development, that would include more than 200 single family homes and dozens of apartments, in Poquoson is meeting resistance.

POQUOSON, Va. (WVEC) -- A major development that would include more than 200 single family homes and hundreds of apartments in Poquoson is meeting resistance.

Many people nearby don't agree with the location and are concerned about the environmental impact.

The “Legacy of Poquoson” project includes 238 single family homes, 107 townhomes, 11 cottages, 176 apartments and 40,000 square feet of retail space on 101-acres along Victory Boulevard.

9.87 acres of wetlands would be impacted by the project; however, The State Water Control Board has already approved a permit to move forward with the project.

To meet Virginia Water Protection Permit Review Requirements, Poquoson must conduct avoidance and minimization of wetland impacts to the maximum extent “practicable” and provide compensation for unavoidable impacts sufficient to achieve no net loss of acreage and functions, to name a few.

All that's left now is for the developers need to submit a Development Plan for staff review.

Poquoson residents Randie Trestrail and Bob Weston argue the project is not a good fit for their water conscious community.

“This scale of a development is not appropriate for Poquoson,” Trestail says.

Their main concerns include traffic congestion, storm water issues and the impact a development this size would have on water quality in the area.

“Very high density much higher than anywhere else and it changes the character of Poquoson,” Weston says. “If they cut back 10% on the amount of this they can avoid the most sensitive wetlands we're concerned about.”

No meeting date for this project has been determined at this time, nor will the project require additional legislative review or approval provided that the development plan meets all required zoning and land use requirements.
