Poquoson school board considering consolidation

The Poquoson School Board is facing a tough decision.

POQUOSON, Va. (WVEC) -- The Poquoson School Board is facing a tough decision.

Because of declining enrollment and federal funding and an aging middle school, four schools need to consolidate to three.

Right now, the school board is considering getting rid of the primary school or the middle school.

There's no timeline on when the school board will decide.

School division staff is gathering more information for the school board, including working with an architectural firm to get the capital projects (construction or renovation work) costs for consolidation different scenarios.

The superintendent recently presented four consolidation scenarios to the school board. Two scenarios have the primary school closing. The other two have the middle school closing.

In one example where the middle school closes, Pre- K-2nd grade students would be at the primary school, 3rd-8th grade at the elementary school, and high school would remain the same.

Christine Conrad is from Poquoson. She went to the elementary, middle and high school. Now she has a kid of her own at the primary school.

Conrad is one of many parents weighing in.

“I think if you ask people in town they would agree the middle school is outdated and in need or rebuilding or repair,” Conrad says. “But I think having a scenario where third through eighth graders are together could present problems.”

Staff hopes to present more information at the school board’s October or November meeting.

The school consolidation presentation can be found below.
