Staying cool when you're out in the heat

Temperatures are heating up across Hampton Roads. The extreme heat can cause health problems before you even known it. Dozens of people worked out by the Elizabeth River Thursday morning. Many of them make it a point to get fit before it gets too hot.

According to the Mayo Clinic, when working out outside you should wear loose-fitting, light clothes, protect against sunburn, drink fluids and avoid hot spots. But sometimes the high temps can be dangerous.

"You feel like you have low energy, you're trying to fight through it. When really you want it to be a really enjoyable experience," said Bil Delk.

It's okay to call it quits and go home if the heat is too much. However, if you feel like you may be having a heat related illness with symptoms like dizziness, the inability to cool yourself or confusion, you should get medical help.
