ROANOKE ISLAND, NC (WVEC) -- Ten sea turtles were returned to the ocean on Friday after being treated at the North Carolina Aquarium.
The turtles were found stranded on beaches in Buxton, Frisco, Avon, and Corolla between December 2016 and March of 2017.
Each suffered from symptoms of cold stunning and were taken to NCARI’s Sea Turtle Assistance and Rehabilitation (STAR) Center.
Cold stunning is a hypothermic state that can impact sea turtles when water temperatures drop quickly.
The turtles were released back into the ocean at Cape Hatteras National Seashore on Coquina Beach.
"It is so rewarding to see these turtles return to their natural habitat," said STAR Center Manager Amber White. "When they see the ocean, they are ready to go, and once they get into the surf, they are gone."
This was the aquariums first turtle release on the Outer Banks this year.
An exam by the NC Aquariums veterinary team determines when the turtles are ready to return to the ocean.
