US Army WWII vet from Hampton honored by community

Bethel Baptist Church and the "Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association" helped celebrate 94-year-old Frank Modlin Senior from Hampton.

HAMPTON, Va. (WVEC) -- Local vet was honored by his community on Saturday for his service in WWII.

Frank Modlin Sr., 94, served in the United States Army 25th infantry division assigned to the 6th Army. His division was so impressive it earned the nickname, Tropic Lightning.

Bethel Baptist Church arranged for the honoring of Frank with the help of Chapter 27-1 Combat Vet Association.

On Saturday, Modlin Sr., and his two sons who served in the Vietnam War, were given quilts from "Quilts of Valor."

Modlin was even given a flag that was flown in Afghanistan, and a motorcycle ride from a member of the Combat Vet Association.

This honoring was not the first recognition Modlin has received for his service. 

Frank Modlin Senior also has the Combat Infantry Badge, Purple Heart, Bronze Star, President Unit Citation, Philippine Presidential Unit Citation, Philippine Liberation Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
