VBFD K-9 to be awarded for her 'unique abilities'

Sadie will become the first canine ever to be recognized at the awards ceremony, according to VBFD.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- Members of the Virginia Beach Fire Department will be honored at their annual awards ceremony, Wednesday. One member in particular is getting a lot of attention for her “unique” abilities.

Sadie will become the first canine ever to be recognized at the awards ceremony, according to VBFD. She serves as an accelerant detecting canine and helps with arson investigations.

“It’s emotional,” said Fire Investigator Alana Cooper, Sadie’s partner and handler. “I can’t even begin to tell you how proud I am of this dog.”

Sadie and Cooper have worked together as a duo for the lasts 3.5 years. The fire department says Sadie’s sense of smell is accurate almost 90% of the time.

“Often times they don’t get the recognition they deserve,” said Cooper, referring to working dogs. “I’m actually asking this dog to put herself in harm’s way - put her in toxic environments to sniff out for the potential of ignitable liquids.”

The duo has traveled as far as the U.S. Virgin Islands to assist federal agencies with arson investigations.
