VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- VDOT held a meeting Wednesday night at Princess Anne High School to talk about the new I-64 Express Lanes opening soon.
The HOT lanes are expected to help ease congestion on an 8-mile stretch from 264 to 564.
At the town hall, the Deputy Secretary of Transportation, Grindly Johnson, gave a presentation that included a wide-range of topics from new signage and operating hours, to new transponders drivers should get.
"There are two different types of transponders you can use. One is a regular transponder and the other is the flex transponder," Johnson said.
She said if drivers have an old EZ-Pass and would like a new transponder for the new HOT lanes, they can trade them in at one of two headquarters in town.
She also spoke about the benefits of the new express lanes. The conversion is expected to shift about 17 percent of cars from the general purpose lanes to the express lanes.
"We're trying to encourage more folks to carpool. We cannot pave our way out of congestion," she said.
VDOT is currently testing the 8-mile stretch right now and expect tolling to begin in early December.
