NASSAWADOX, Va. (WVEC) -- A woman on her way to work was stabbed to death in an Eastern Shore hospital parking lot on Monday morning.
Northampton sheriff's deputies have charged 58-year-old Winston Leroy Burton of Cheriton with first degree murder.
Sheriff David Doughty, Jr. said Burton attacked Shelli L. Crockett, 42, in the parking lot of Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital.
Emergency dispatchers received a call about the stabbing at 7:32 a.m. The caller told them the attacker left the scene.
When deputies got there at 7:40 a.m., they found hospital staff members treating Crockett who had been stabbed several times.
Crockett died a short time later.
Hospital spokesman Peter Glagola described the stabbing as a "domestic altercation."
Crockett was a member of the hospital's environmental services team, according to another spokesperson, Sally Schreiber. Crockett had worked at the hospital since 2005.
In her own description of herself on her Facebook page, Crockett said she loved to spend time with her daughter and family and also "loved to go walking and hang out with my friends."
Crockett was a 1994 graduate of Nandua High School.
Crockett was attacked in a parking lot outside the hospital after she had arrived in her vehicle to start her shift at work Monday morning, Sheriff Doughty said.
"She had already gotten to work this morning when the altercation occurred in the parking lot," he said.
The hospital was on lockdown until 12:58 p.m. because of the incident.
Burton is in the Eastern Shore Regional Jail, with bond denied.
Deputies and Virginia State Police trooper are investigating the case. Anyone with information about the situation can contact the Northampton County Sheriff's Office at 757-678-0458.
