Hospital to implement tougher security after stabbing

NASSAWADOX, Va. (Delmarva Now) -- Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital will implement additional security measures after one of its employees was stabbed to death in the hospital parking lot on Monday morning.

The hospital in Nassawadox implemented an employee assistance program Monday to help employees deal with grief or trauma and the program will remain in place for the remainder of the week, according to hospital spokeswoman Sally Schreiber. Riverside Behavioral Health Center in Hampton, Virginia, also sent a counselor. The Northampton County Sheriff's Office had a chaplain present at the hospital for the duration of the day.

“It was a pretty rough day for our team that’s for sure,” Schreiber said.

Shelli L. Crockett of Keller, Virginia, died after being attacked Monday morning during a domestic dispute. Fifty-eight-year-old Winston Leroy Burton of Cheriton has been charged with first-degree murder in her death. He is being held at the Eastern Shore Regional Jail with bond denied.

Northampton County Sheriff David L. Doughty Jr. says Crockett had just arrived to work when she was stabbed multiple times. The hospital was placed on lockdown until about 1 p.m. At a press conference Monday afternoon, Doughty Jr. said Burton was arrested at the jail shortly after the incident; Doughty declined to give additional details, citing the ongoing investigation.

Crockett was a member of the hospital’s environmental services team and had worked there since 2005.

The relationship between the victim and suspect remains unclear. It’s unknown whether Burton has an attorney.
