NASSAWADOX, Va. (Delmarva Now) -- A Northampton County man charged with first-degree murder in connection with the fatal stabbing of a woman Monday outside Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital has served time in prison for two previous crimes he committed on Virginia's Eastern Shore.
Winston Leroy Burton, 58, of Cheriton, is charged with murdering Shelli L. Crockett, 42, of Keller. Crockett was a member of the environmental services team at Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital and had just arrived for her work shift Monday morning when she was attacked, police said.
A Facebook profile for Burton includes a post dated March 12, 2016, announcing Burton's engagement to Crockett.
Burton in 2006 pleaded guilty to a malicious wounding charge in Northampton County. He was sentenced to 20 years in the penitentiary, with 15 years suspended.
In 1993, Burton was convicted after a jury trial in neighboring Accomack County of shooting with intent to maim.
He was sentenced to five years in the penitentiary on that charge and to two years, to run consecutively, on a related firearm charge.
Police say Burton stabbed Crockett multiple times during an altercation Monday in the parking lot outside the hospital in Nassawadox.
The hospital was on lockdown until 12:58 p.m. Monday because of the incident.
Burton was arrested Monday at the Eastern Shore Regional Jail shortly after the incident happened, according to Northampton County Sheriff David L. Doughty Jr.
Burton was taken from the jail to the hospital for treatment of injuries he had suffered during the altercation; he subsequently was released from the hospital, Doughty said. He noted Burton's injuries did not result from when he was taken into custody.
Burton is being held with bond denied at the Eastern Shore Regional Jail.
Funeral services for Crockett are scheduled to be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at Quinby Cemetery with Pastors Jonathan Carpenter and Wanda Nichols officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Shore Christian Academy, 11624 Occohannock Road, Exmore, VA 23350.
In addition to her parents, Crockett is survived by a daughter, a sister and a stepbrother, all of Keller, Virginia.
