Parksley nursing home won't close after all, Riverside says

(Delmarvanow.com) -- Riverside Health System announced late Friday a nursing home in Parksley will not close after all.

The announced change is based on progress made with a potential buyer who previously filed a letter of intent to purchase the facility, a spokesman said.

Riverside announced in August it would cease to operate Riverside Shore Rehabilitation Center in Parksley in October because of multiple issues with the building, including recurrent flooding and a recent lightning strike that affected the fire panel.

"We are pleased to announce that Riverside has updated the Office of Licensure and Certification and withdrawn the closure plan effective today, October 6, 2017. This decision comes from progress we have made with Smith-Packett on the letter of intent to purchase the facility," said Peter Glagola, Riverside spokesman.

Current residents of Riverside Shore Rehabilitation Center in Parksley and their families were being notified Friday that the center would not be closing, according to Glagola.

"With the closing rescinded, the center will be able to accept new residents effective immediately," he said, adding, "We are grateful to our Shore leadership and our team members who have continued to provide excellent care to our residents during this difficult time of transition."

Last month, the health care system announced a Roanoke company, Smith/Packett Med-Com LLC, had signed a letter of intent to purchase the nursing home.

The company has been in business for more than 30 years and in that time has developed or acquired more than 150 senior health and housing facilities with a total value in excess of $1.5 billion, according to the company website.

Around one third of the residents of the Parksley facility had been placed elsewhere as of Sept. 8, Glagola said.

The closure was to affect 89 long-term residents and 128 employees, Riverside said at the time it was announced.

Glagola said Riverside will provide updates as the nursing home sale is finalized.
