Wildfire season starts Sunday in Virginia

VIRGINIA (WVEC) -- Fall wildfire season in Virginia starts on October 15.

According to the Virginia Department of Forestry, more than 96 percent of wildfires in Virginia are caused by human activity.

Hot, dry and windy conditions continue to fueled a number of wildfires in California, and in our area, crews are in an increased state of readiness.

“Before the rain this week, it had been more than 30 days since any measurable precipitation fell on the Commonwealth, that has us very concerned because when things are very dry they tend to burn much more quickly,” said Fred Turck, VDOF’s wildfire prevention manager.

People burning trash or debris remains the top cause of wildfires in Virginia.

VDOF encourages people who burn downed leaves to keep their piles small, have a rake or shovel on hand, and keep a charged water hose nearby.
