Police identify woman killed after being hit by train in Williamsburg

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (WVEC) -- Police have released the identity of a woman that was killed after being hit by an Amtrak train Sunday.

Amtrak said it was their train 66, which was headed from Newport News to Boston at the time.

47-year-old Laura Griffin was killed in the accident.

The accident happened just before 6 o'clock Sunday evening, between Bypass and Richmond Road. Investigators say a woman was lying across the tracks when she was struck by the train. The train blasted its horns to alert Griffin, but she refused to leave the track. The train was unable to brake in time.

Amtrak said no passengers or crew were hurt.

The area around the tracks was fenced off with no trespassing signs.
