Colonial Williamsburg's new Axe-throwing Range opens Saturday

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (WVEC) -- You've heard of shooting ranges, but what about an axe-throwing range?

Colonial Williamsburg will host a grand opening for their brand new axe-throwing range Saturday, July 15.

"Our increasing numbers of Historic Area guests enjoy engaging, hands-on experiences that enrich their visit and support Colonial Williamsburg's core education mission," said Colonial Williamsburg President and CEO Mitchell Reiss. "Like our popular kid's archeological dig, educational Musket Range and other new offerings, the Axe-throwing Range offers guests a chance to experience the 18th century like the people who created our nation."

Visitors will be handed a "belt" ax, which were the standard-issue axes used in many units of the American Revolution. These axes were used for chores, such as clearing brush and cutting wood. They were not commonly thrown in battle, contrary to fictional depictions.

Guests will receive an interpretive lesson on the history of military axes, then an instructor will present a safety lesson on throwing at poplar stump targets, as a test more of skill and technique than of strength. Visitors will then move to individual lanes with corresponding targets, where they can test their skill under close supervision.

The range is located in the Historic Area at the intersection of Nicholson and Boutetourt Street. Lessons will begin on the hour, and half-hour, every day between 10 a.m. and noon, and again between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

A special ticket is required, which costs $10, $9 for members of the military.

Guests who wish to participate must be 12-years-old or older. Guests younger than 17-years-old must be accompanied by an adult.
