Machinery may have started fire at recycling facility in Chesapeake

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WVEC) -- Emergency crews battled a fire at a recycling facility Tuesday evening.

The fire at Tidewater Fiber Corporation on Diamond Hill Road started just after 8:30 p.m.

Firefighters saw heavy smoke coming from a building that houses a conveyor system used to separate materials when they arrived. Crews had the fire under control within 40 minutes.

The building had heavy smoke damage, and there was extensive damage to the conveyor system.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but evidence suggests the machinery used to operate the conveyor system may have started the fire.
