VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC-TV) -- They promised to get 1,000 volunteers and they got them. Hampton Roads showed its love for Volunteer Hampton Roads' 18th Annual Family Volunteer Day.

People of all different backgrounds and walks of life came together with their families and work families to sort 16,000 pounds of donated food that will go out to 800 area families served by about a dozen area shelters, agencies and food banks.

They packed the Batten Center at Virginia Wesleyan College with smiles, positive energy and cheers while getting the job done. Victor Mercado is just 7 years old. His mother has brought him here every year to teach him the value of volunteering.

"Teamwork," Victor said. "Helping people who are homeless."

Towne Bank, Geico and Greenbrier Community Church were some of the businesses and community groups with volunteers there.

"We are so excited about the people of Hampton Roads,"Dawna Ellis said, a Volunteer Hampton Roads Board Member. "Whenever there's a need in the community, they come together."

And Victor is glad his family came together with others. Simply put: "It's fun!" Victor said.
