Man drowns in James River at Fort Boykin Historic Park

ISLE OF WIGHT, Va. (WVEC) -- An investigation is underway after a man drowned at an Isle of Wight County park.

Authorities were first called out to Fort Boykin on Friday night in reference to a verbal altercation. An arriving deputy was unable to locate any disturbance.  Then a short time later at about 8 p.m., a second call came in about a man who had entered the James River at the park, and other people who were with him were unable to locate the man.

Several police agencies took part in a search of the James River near Fort Boykin. Shortly after 10 o'clock, the body of 36-year-old Jeffery Ayer of Smithfield was recovered from the river. A preliminary investigation by the medical examiner indicates alcohol may have played a factor in Ayer's death.

Pending the final outcome, it is believed to be an accidental drowning.
